I've been travelling within Bangkok in a group, occasionally using the GrabTaxi 6-seater option to get to places when it's not convenient to do so by public transport. I'm aware of how it's supposed to work - you pay the metered fare + 20THB Grab fee - but in practice, this hasn't been happening. Every time, instead of starting the meter, the driver points to the (inflated) estimated price range given in the app, and tries to charge the upper bound of that as a fixed fee. On our first journey, the driver didn't even have a taxi meter (seemed like they were using their own vehicle instead of the specified taxi) but we were able to negotiate a fair price. On our second journey, we were initially assigned a driver who had stuck their ID cards all over the meter and wouldn't budge on price, so we got out, and ordered another, who had wrapped their meter remarkably well in some cloth.
