Photo taken from BTS Saint Louis Station (Silom Line) today. The current oil crisis is more severe than the crises in 1973 and 1979. Yet Thailand still has a gross diesel subsidy of THB 17 per litre, and fuel excise duty of THB 7 per litre, making a nett subsidy of THB 10 per litre. This is absolute looney tunes. The price of retail energy (oil, gas, and electricity) should NEVER be subsidised, because it encourages overconsumption. The taxpayers’ money would be better spent improving public transport, particularly buses. Some of those 50-year-old buses would like to retire, and be replaced with modern, aircon buses 🚌 [link] [comments] |
